We watch America's Got Talent and really enjoy it. I think we're watching for the same reason Howie Mandel agreed to be a judge this year...we're looking for the Wow! moments. We're looking to see something that surprises us or that causes an emotional response.
It occurs to me that maybe that's how many of us view our faith anymore. There seem to be few mysteries left in the world, so we reduce God's creation to the mundane. We've become insensitive to the beauty of the ordinary and long for that which surprises us.
Certainly, the Wow! moments are really cool. They are signature moments to be sure. Moses parting the Red Sea...that had to be a Wow! moment. Seeing the walls of Jericho fall at the sound of Joshua's army screaming...absolutely a Wow! moment. Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead...a sure fire Wow!, and later being raised from the dead was maybe the biggest Wow! moment of them all.
Make no mistake that our God is eternally capable of producing the awe inspiring. One has only to read of what is to come in Revelation to understand that. But I think that it is the quiet, personal moments that really make the biggest splash on us. It's having your child profess their belief in and love for Jesus. It's the first time you and your spouse joined hands and prayed, just the two of you. It's the moment when you felt the most broken which brought as close as possible to God and led you back to obedience.
When God whispers into your life, let it hold your attention the way a Wow! moment would and let it lead you to even greater levels of love and obedience for Him.
